In the late '80s, if you asked Dave Murphy what he thought his future held, he probably wouldn't have said "fertilizer baron." But that's how it turned out. Now Dave manufactures a line of 100% natural and organic fertilizers under the Welcome Harvest Farm Ltd. brand from his home on Texada island................

.................Mr. Murphy first came to BC's Sunshine Coast in the early 70s, "I was in love and I followed her," he says, but he was also among the first wave of back-to-the-landers, who were leaving their urban upbringing behind. Welcome Harvest Farm grew out of that notion. As Mr.Murphy cast around looking for organic solutions to increase the productivity of his market gardening efforts, he began to realize that there wasn't realty anything out there. Knowing what he needed, Dave located a source for the minerals, trucked it in himself, and, in an act of foresight, brought in twice as much as he needed, hoping to sell it to neighbors and pay for the transportation costs. The material went so quickly that he did it again and again for the next couple of years, making a small profit in the process. Eventually, he bought his own mixing equipment and created packaging. While it may have been a hard sell in the beginning, now people understand organic gardening and the value of sustainable agriculture.
